-- Yuen Wo Ping on Kungfu Hustle --

Yuen Wo Ping, who rarely makes any public appearances, showed up at Hong Kong Film Society Evening. He has put on some weight.

When Sammo Hung resigned as Kungfu Hustle's martial arts director reportedly due to disharmony with Stephen Chow, Yuen Wo Ping took over. Now that filming has long been completed, did Yuen Wo Ping not encounter any problems on the set? Yuen Wo Ping believed that communication is very important and there was no unpleasantness between them. Some said that Stephen Chow's demand for action scenes were too far-fetched and it was hard to work with him, to which Yuen Wo Ping responded, "Every director is far-fetched in their imaginations, Stephen Chow is not the only one. I have already received my pay." He also disclosed that he would soon be directing a US financed action movie set in the Republican period. He said that among the newer martial arts stars, Wu Jing is the more outstanding one. On the other hand, he lamented about disruption in the stunt profession, which may lead to lack of capable successors. He cited, as an example, that his team was left with only about eight members. Upon being asked, Yuen Wo Ping also dispelled rumours about Keanu Reeves paying US$20 million out of his pocket to reward the stunt performers of The Matrix Trilogy; he noted, in reality, Keanu Reeves gave over ten motorbikes to them, for all of them had got injured during filming. On being asked about Liu Chia Liang's jibe last year on The Matrix being an amalgam of special effects without real kungfu, as opposed to Drunken Monkey, Yuen Wo Ping quipped, "Each master has their own method, it depends on the film genre." Kungfu Hustle is being re-shot for a couple of weeks in Shanghai as Stephen Chow was unhappy with some of the scenes. Kung Fu Hustle, currently in post-production, is hitting the theatres this summer.  Takung News

Wenlian Studio said on 24 Feb that Tsui Hark has roped in Sanda champion Sang Wei Lin, who starred in Xanda, to play one of the leading roles in the TV adaptation of Seven Swords of Mt Tian.  Tianfu Morning News

Korean actress Jang Suh Hee, who shall play opposite Andy Lau in the movie version of Seven Swords of Mt Tian, has been studying Chinese, and attending wushu classes to learn how to perform martial arts moves. She had the script translated to Korean, in order to better grasp the emotional scenes and inflection of her lines. She hopes to act in her own voice, no matter how difficult Chinese is.  Yangcheng New Express

-- Dion Lam on The Promise --

Dion Lam, who assisted in the action scenes of The Matrix Trilogy, Spiderman 1 and 2, is teaming up with Chen Kaige and Peter Pau in the upcoming The Promise, a magical tale of sword, sorcery and future that took place three thousand years ago. Dion Lam started receiving some informal wushu training at the age of 9 from his neighbour, a wushu coach. Developing an interest in martial arts, he later studied Karate, Taichi, and Northern Praying Mantis Boxing under action director-filmmaker Tsui Siu Ming. Since the age of 17, he has been working in the entertainment field, following Tsui Siu Ming around. Basically, he did anything, from prop co-ordinator, cinematographer, stunt double, to being a producer or assistant director for his mentor's films. Usually, he worked as a stunt master. His first collaboration on Mainland project was Holy Robe of Shaolin. He has doubled Chow Yun Fatt, Jet Li, but due to his lean build, he mostly doubled actresses such as Maggie Cheung.

Dion Lam was doing Spiderman 2 when he received The Promise's script last August. Finding the script to be highly challenging, he accepted it, and pushed back his other Hollywood projects which are paying him princely sums. Dion Lam said The Promise will be very different from past wuxia movies. It will combine modern technology with essence of martial arts. The overall tone of the film is something that has never been done before in China; It will present everything in a brand new way. Cecilia Cheung is playing a concubine, Jang Dong Gun a slave, Hiroyuki Sanada a general, Nicholas Tse a baron, Chen Hong a deity, and Liu Ye a ghost. Dion Lam expects The Promise will be a mind-blowing experience, one that makes the world take notice of Chinese films. Filming begins on 15 March. Henan Newspapering Center

-- Initial D-erailment --

Peter Lam, chairman of Media Asia Group, has announced that [unfortunately] Andrew Lau and Alan Mak will indeed be replacing Tsui Hark to direct Initial D, claiming schedule conflicts as the reason. Felix Chong is now re-working on the script. Shooting starts in Japan this April. [Good luck to the production without Tsui Hark's brilliant visions and unyielding spirit.]  Tyfo Music

-- Time Breaker --
Whether Jackie Chan would eventually be doing a cameo in The Twins Effect sequel (and stage the much anticipated fight against Donnie Yen), he would still be going to Yunnan next month for filming of Stanley Tong's Time Breaker. Time Breaker, an arthouse movie interspersed with action that has been in development for over two years, is about Jackie Chan time travelling to Qin Dynasty, and undergoes two tragic yet beautiful romances - one in each era. The movie is being produced with US$40 million.  City Express

-- Initial D-isputes --
Shooting of Initial D is being delayed due to conflicts between Tsui Hark and Media Asia Group. Firstly, there is a disparity of some HK$10 million between the two's proposals on the production budget. Tsui Hark wants the movie to be as grandiloquent as possible and to film the car races on actual locations - primarily Japan and Europe - as depicted in the comics. However, this would require a hefty budget which Media Asia Group is loath to fork out. Secondly, the script is heading in two directions. Media Asia Group wants the movie to be commercially viable, while Tsui Hark insists on making it according to his filming language and style. Thirdly, while they are basically in agreement on the male cast Jay Chou, Edison Chan, Shawn Yue and Anthony Wong, they are again in dissent on the female lead. Owing to many disputes, the studio decided to push shooting from February to March, with no date fixed, contingent on how the issue develops. Media Asia Group declined comment on what it would do should the controversies remain unresolved, but some top-dog from it privately revealed that the director would be changed if the worst comes to the worst.  Oriental Sports Daily

-- New Initial D-irector --
The director for Initial D, which is being planned to begin filming in March, has been changed. Apparently, Tsui Hark, having conflicting perspectives with the studio Media Asia Group on how this car-racing adaptation should be shot, chose to relinquish his post rather than compromising his visions. Subsequently, Andrew Lau of Stormriders and Infernal Affairs fame has been roped in to direct Initial D.  Chengdu Daily

-- Seven Swords of Mt Tian --

Photo: Shaoxing Daily

In late January, Tsui Hark flew to Xinchang, where Zhang Ji Zhong's Jin Yong adaptations were partly shot on location, to survey the areas to be used for shooting of Seven Swords of Mt Tian. It was three in the afternoon when he reached Xinchang. Without any rest, he hurriedly headed for Xinchang Buddhist Temple, an essential place in Shaolin King of Martial Arts, 36th Chamber of Southern Shaolin. Tsui Hark was very satisfied with Xinchang Buddhist Temple, which will be serving as backdrop for Mt Wutai scene, where a very epic battle takes place in the novel Qi Jian Xia Tian Shan's opening passage. At Prajna Valley, facing the awe-inspiring sculpted cliffs and waterfall, Tsui Hark pondered purposefully as he walked, bent on fitting a certain scene to be filmed there. On the second day, Tsui Hark, together with his crew, went to Three Thousand Metre Gorge, Nineteen Peaks, etc. Tsui Hark was very impressed with the unadulterated beauty of the mountains and rivers, praising that Xinchang is very unique, very picturesque, he had never witnessed such a splendour before. At the same time, he provided some suggestions on the constructions of the sets. Shooting of Seven Swords of Mt Tian should begin this July.  Shaoxing Daily

-- Stormriders 2 TV Series --
Storm Riders 2 TV series, produced by Hunan TV Broadcast, is slated to begin production on 30 January. Zhao Wen Zhuo and He Run Dong will continue to play Wind and Cloud respectively, while Huang Yi and Qin Lan will replace the original actresses Shui Ling and Tao Hong as Dream II and Chu Chu. Tony Ching Siu Tung will be the series' action director. Storm Riders 2 is adapted from episode 100 to 200 of the comics by Ma Wing Shing. Production budget is 30 million renminbi.  Liao Ning Daily

-- Twins Effect 2 --

Jackie Chan's son Chan Cho Ming, a non-martial artist, is set to star as a prince in EMG's major blockbuster of the year Twins Effect sequel alongside Twins, Edison Chen, Tony Leung Ka Fai, Daniel Wu, Fan Bing Bing and Wilson Chan. Chan Cho Ming, who has plenty of action scenes to handle, is currently being trained by Corey Yuen. Chan Cho Ming has full support from Jackie Chan, who is taking time out of his busy schedule to do a cameo in the movie as a general. Jackie Chan will have a major 15 to 20 minutes fight scene with Donnie Yen, who has another upcoming project on hand. Twins Effect 2, budgeted at 80 million renminbi, will be jointly directed by Corey Yuen and Patrick Leung and production begins next month in Yunnan, where an ancient city Huadu is being built at 5 million reniminbi.  Sina Entertainment, Xing Xi Times

-- Cheung Chi Leung on Seven Swords of Mt Tian --

Fists of Iron (Tie Quan Lang Zi), a 30 part series on Sanda produced by Huayi Brothers Taihe Film, is currently undergoing production in Shanghai. Cheung Chi Leung has been specially invited to be the series' artistic producer. Starring Nicky Wu and Chin Siu Ho, the series is made with the aim of coinciding with China's hosting of Olympics in 2008. Hong Kong's foremost art-house director Cheung Chi Leung, who came to Mainland China to work on Seven Swords of Mt Tian, made use of the available time slots in between to shoot Hero on the Silkroad. Subsequently, he agreed to Nicky Wu's request to assist in shooting of Fists of Iron. He said that lots of time has been put into the script for Seven Swords of Mt Tian TV series, and the series has been expanded to 60 episodes as they felt that the script is of tremendous quality. He had been to Nanjiang to survey the area, and will be going to Hengdian and Xinjiang at the end of January for location scouting. Tsui Hark is directing Seven Swords of Mt Tian movie version while he would primarily be filming the TV version. The movie and TV versions are likely to feature different actors and actresses, due to time constraints. The scripts for the two versions will also be significantly different. While the movie could strive for perfection, the TV version is bound by certain rules, and progress of the shoot is very important. Another upcoming movie of  Cheung Chi Leung is Mozi's Assault (working title), a script, budgeted at around US$7.5 million, adapted from Sakemi Kenichi's comics which he has been developing slowly and steadily for over 6 years.  Beijing Youth Daily

-- Yuen Wo Ping's Protégé: Tiger Chen --

Photo: Sichuan Online

Tiger Chen, 29, 1.76m, born in Chengdu, being a fan of wuxia productions, started learning martial arts at the age of 8 and has won numerous competitions in China. He migrated to United States of America 11 years ago. Later, he was spotted by Yuen Wo Ping at a karate competition in USA, and subsequently became his protégé - one whom Yuen Wo Ping is very proud of. Thence, he joined Yuen Clan Stunt Team, helping out in the choreography and teaching of martial arts sequences in such blockbusters as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Matrix trilogy, Charlie's Angels and Kill Bill. He was one of those responsible for teaching Keanu Reeves and the rest martial arts prior to shooting of The Matrix. He said that Keanu Reeves' moves were mainly adapted from Taichi but the celebrities in the movie had difficulty understanding the logic behind it such as "lifting a thousand catties with merely four ounces." Tiger Chen revealed that Yuen Wo Ping would be directing a martial arts movie for the first time in the new millennium next year, and he would still be working as martial arts choreographer.  Huaxi Daily

-- Anita Mui Passes Away at Age 40 --
Hong Kong star Anita Mui died of cervical cancer on 30 December 2003. On 29 December evening, her close friends from the circle, including Zhao Wen Zhuo, Andy Lau, Maggie Cheung, Chingmy Yau, Nicholas Tse, stayed by her side at the hospital bed. Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh, Derek Yee, Anita Yuen, Eric Tsang, etc visited her immediately on learning of her deteriorating condition. They and Anita Mui fans were grief-stricken when she passed away at 2:30am. The illustrious career of the multi-talented, Golden Horse Award winning actress-singer include Shanghai, Shanghai, My Father is a Hero, Drunken Master 2, Heroic Trio, Saviour of the Soul, etc. She was to join Zhang Yimou's House of Flying Daggers before cancer took its toll. Producer Zhang Wei Ping said that Anita Mui's role would not be replaced by anyone, as a form of respect and tribute to her. Zhang Yimou would make amendments to the the script accordingly. Tsui Hark, who was in Shanghai to promote Xanda, was so overwhelmed with tears of sorrow by the death of Anita Mui that he couldn't not utter a word for a few minutes before collecting himself. He recollected that when he first interviewed Anita Mui, he found her to be very skinny. Though he did not hire Anita Mui who was in her teens then, she still left a very deep impression on him. He later learned that she was singing everyday. After knowing her, Tsui Hark observed that Anita Mui was a very righteous, sincere person, one to whom you could bare your heart, and added that she would live forever in our hearts. -- 36th Chamber of Southern Shaolin --

Production of the 30 episode 36th Chamber of Southern Shaolin has wrapped up recently after three months shoot. Written by Zhu Xin and Guo Jun Li, 36th Chamber of Southern Shaolin follows closely to the plot of the original series, Southern Shaolin. It revolves around Lu Siniang's attempted assassination on Emperor Yongzheng, and how Lu Siniang's and Fang Shiyu's paths cross with each other. Comparatively, 36th Chamber of Southern Shaolin has better storyline and fight scenes, tighter pacing, and more comedic elements, and is strongly imprinted with the trademark of Yuen Clan direction, helmed again by Yuen Cheung Yan. Except for Theresa Lee who couldn't make it due to schedule conflicts, all the original cast members Zhang Tie Lin, Wu Jing, Li Nan, etc were back.  Hengdian World Studios

-- Xanda Press Conference; Seven Swords of Mt Tian Hexalogy --

Xanda press conference was held in Guangzhou on 18 December. Several thorny questions were raised, such as the box-office failure of Legend of Zu. Tsui Hark said that he's constantly looking for new methods of filmmaking. He said that each film carries some degree of experimentations, and one should look ahead into its effects on the future, rather than measuring it by box-office takings alone. One should be steadfast in gearing towards the progress of Chinese films, in laying a solid groundwork. He said Xanda, which emphasises real full-contact sparring, is much closer to reality and humanity, compared to his wuxia movies, and is but one of the paths he is walking on. He hopes Xanda will herald the beginning of new trend in movie making. Tsui Hark also clarified the reason for the US investors' decision to abort Romance of the Book and Sword was that it involved Muslims and the whole film revolved around the Holy Quran. The issue became a sensitive topic after the 911 event, and every distributor was against filming it.

Come next year, Tsui Hark would first shoot Initial D in March. After which he's directing Seven Swords of Mt Tian film hexalogy, "Every part of the hexalogy has its own story, for the culture of swordplay is worth exploring. It happens that this story is about wuxia and the art and ethos of swordplay. I hope to film in a new, different way. A director should always be creative, and be able adapt to changes. However, there is a limit to one's brain, for one could not go beyond the logic of one's mind. No matter what one does, traces from one's previous achievements would still be there. However, I still wish to present a brand new way and style of shooting movies. It ultimately depends on how I'm going to do it. I am constantly moving on, for I hope there is no boundary to our movies."  Nanfang City Daily

-- 36th Chamber of Southern Shaolin --

Once again, Wu Jing dons the robe of Fang Shiyu in 36th Chamber of Southern Shaolin, sequel to the highly successful Southern Shaolin TV series. Despite playing the same character, Fang Shiyu is no longer young and arrogant. Rather, he has grown more mature and trustworthy. As such Wu Jing takes a different approach to the role. Ever since beginning his career in the showbiz, Wu Jing has invariably been compared and linked to Jet Li due to their similar wushu backgrounds. Wu Jing rebutted that he is himself and won't imitate anyone, and would retain his own personality. Wu Jing said he doesn't like "socialising", even though some may think that's how the entertainment circle works, and won't do it. He said it's as a form of respect to himself. While he admires those Chinese stars who has made a successful crossover to Hollywood, Wu Jing said that Hollywood is not his goal anymore. What matters most to him is putting all his effort on his present works. That Wu Jing is willing to making sacrifices in his works is due to to a growing passion for filming. Recently, his head was wounded by a spear, and was bleeding profusely. However, after applying simple bandages, he would still get on the set. When asked about marriage, Wu Jing said it would depend on affinity. He said that his significant other half needs not be beautiful, but must be kind-hearted and charismatic.  Hangzhou Daily

-- Xanda --

Apparently, Tsui Hark might be invited to be its producer.  Huashang Daily

-- New/Recent TV Releases --

Praying Mantis Boxing
On founder of Praying Mantis Boxing. If the trailer is anything to go by, this 20 part series showcases the magic ingredient that has mostly been missing in martial arts series in the recent years - genuine martial arts sequences, with no camera tricks, choppy editing or special effects. One of the series' main stars (not the lead), Shi Fan-Xi (Shi Liang), who is a newcomer, is a wushu champion, who does the fight scenes with great panache and power.

Trailer: TVB | Order DVD/VCD at YesAsia

Taichi Hero
On the founder of Chen Style Taichi starring Wu Yue. This series focuses too much on palace intrigues and what few martial arts scenes in it are rather uncharacteristic, thanks in no part to the shoddy camerawork and editing. Taichi is rarely used, even after the protagonist has developed the style. Wu Yue, a rising Mainland wushu star, who has worked with Zhao Wen Zhuo in Huo Yuan Jia, shows reasonable expertise in solo Long Fist and Taichi scenes. Wu Yue is a wushu champion who was honoured as China's national class athlete, and ironically, majored in acting.

Lian Cheng Jue

Director Wang Xin Ming's second Jin Yong adaptation. Based on lesser known Jin Yong novel touching mainly on the themes of such human fallacies as greed and betrayal, this series of high production values was shot on exotic locations such as the breathtaking snow peaks. Assembling a martial arts based cast consisting of Wu Yue, Yu Cheng Hui, Ji Chun Hua, etc, and Lian Cheng Jue is touted to have realistic martial arts scenes (though leaning somewhat on wuxia swordplay style - wirefu).
