Seven frands of Wu Jing from
Taiwan, including myself, toured China during 18 to 26 August 2001. It was a
great pleasure to travel with them. We never failed to find interesting things
to do in each place. We were overwhelmed with euphoria to be able to meet Wu
Jing during our sojourn in China.
To be frank, we weren't particularly confident that we would meet him. All we
knew was that he would be in Hengdian, The City of Films, located in Zhejiang,
at the end of the month but we weren't sure of the exact date. We put Hengdian
in the later half of our itinerary, so that we might have better chances of
seeing him. If he wasn't there, we could not but only explore the West Lake in
Hangzhou.
Unexpectedly, Lady Luck was on our side. Not only was Wu Jing in Hengdian, but
we met with him during his less busy days - courtesy of the lead actress, who
was delayed by a day or two. If she was on time, we would not have the chance to
savour Wu Jing's culinary delights.
Day 5, Part 1 - First Personal Contact with Wu Jing
After reaching Hengdian Group Ying Shi Cheng Hotel in Hengdian, and having
settled down, we received a call from Wu Jing. On confirming our arrival, Wu
Jing informed us that he would be sending a bus to fetch us. He also enquired
whether we were staying in the old or new hotel and about our hotel room
numbers. Our darling, Ninnie, was still panicking, "What do you want our room
numbers for ..." After disconnecting the phone, Ninnie relayed that Wu Jing was
sending someone to fetch us and would be dining with us this evening.
If anyone were present then, we would have laid ourselves open to ridicule. All
of us pretended to be cool, to be philosophical but were practically clueless of
what to do next. "Dining together? It might not be nice. It's ... it's ..." A
sense of incredulity was clearly written all over our faces. At that time,
someone started hunting for memorabilia to get his autographs and the most being
VCD covers. At least what we bought in Beijing could come in handy. Then, I
realised that I was not a true frand of Wu Jing, having come here empty-handed.
Someone reminded me that I could get him to autograph Legend of Zu. Thank
goodness, I have bought it.
Some time later, Tina informed us that the bus had arrived. A guy was already
waiting at the lift. He appeared to be one of the production crew. We gasped
deeply, boarded the bus, and moved on to Guangzhou Street. After alighting, the
guy led us to a narrow lane with scaffoldings by its side, but we were rather
too excited and apprehensive to inch forward. Hesitantly, we peered inside and
saw a few bald-headed actors having their food.
"Is that Wu Jing?" Someone whispered in my ears. I did not know, it was hard to
tell. Perhaps a group of ladies behaving sneakily became the centre of attention
and everyone started to glance over in our direction. We felt somewhat awkward
and slowed down. All of sudden, someone reared up among the group of actors ...
It's Wu Jing! As if meeting some known acquaintances, Wu Jing stood there
insouciantly, beckoning us over. At once, we quickened our pace.
Carefully, we ambled through the lane and before I could look up, a voice came
from above, "So many visitors? Where are you from?"
"Taiwan."
"So far? You came here by air?"
"Aye."
When I raised my head and looked around, beside the lady who talked to me, there
was another person on the scaffoldings who was armed with a camera. A reporter?
We wanted to hide, but that reporter continued, "Wu Jing had been waiting
anxiously for you on knowing that you would be here. He was so delighted. Are
all of you students?"
As Wu Jing was busy talking to a reporter, we went around the temple, exploring
the environment. Later, the production crew began shooting, and we sat near the
the temple's entrance, watching the actors rehearsing. After sending off a
reporter, Wu Jing approached us and sat by my side!
"Was it interesting to see them filming?" He grinned.
"Yeah, I guess so." Otherwise, what else was there to say?
Wu Jing noticed Ninnie's report book to which she handed him and he flipped
through the pages.
"Hmmm, when did I say this? When were these photos taken?"
When he saw a news on slimming, he was rather taken aback, " When did I ever say
I am going to slim down?"
Looking at the photographs again, "Who is this? No, no, it can't be me. So
old-fashioned!"
Wu Jing appeared to be totally engrossed, " Anything else for me to see? Any
other pictures?"
Yun-Qi brought out her collection. On the cover was a pair of lovely dogs, and
Wu Jing examined the photo and said, " Huh? Is that me? Hmmm, the make-up is not
bad. More adorable than me."
We giggled but ingenuously, he stressed, " Really, it's true, the make-up is
really good."
The time had come for his turn to act and as he headed towards the stage, he was
still joking around with other actors. Suddenly, the director shouted, "Action!"
and forthwith, Wu Jing's mien changed to a serious look. Wow! So amazing. We
were full of praises for Wu Jing when the director exclaimed "Cut!" and Wu Jing
again frolicked around like a innocent kid. Little wonder he is always the
production team's fruit of buoyancy.
In the subsequent scene, Wu Jing had to jump onto the stage; Jin De-Mao was
discussing with Wu Jing and another actor, and he told Wu Jing, "Be careful,
safety first."
Wu Jing replied mischievously, " Safety first? I better walk up to the stage
from the back!"
In this scene, the characters below the stage were panicking and Wu Jing deftly
jumped onto the stage and consoled them, "Do not be alarmed, do not rush. Very
soon, we could call it a day and get to rest." We bursted out laughing. The
director requested for a re-take and Wu Jing jumped up onto the stage and
changed his lines, "Please relax. It should be okay this time. Should be
O-K-A-Y,!"
And thus ended the day's filming session. |
