Seven Swords of Mt Tian
is a Liang Yusheng adaptation initially conceived by Cheung Sing Yim. When
Tsui Hark formally joined the production on 29 November 2002, it turned into
a heck of an ambitious
project consisting of not only a TV series that is being expanded from 30 to
60 episodes, and now to 74, and a movie hexalogy known as
The Seven Swords, but also a
massively multiplayer online game (MMORPG) and a 40-volume comics to be jointly
developed by Korea (Joyon Entertainment) and Japan. Total investments
for the entire project are 1 billion yuan. Alongside the production
is a documentary, Unprecedented, depicting the making of this visionary project. Tsui
Hark, who works tirelessly and exigently oversees every aspect of the production
from script-writing, costume design through casting to martial arts
choreography, is poised to
push the envelopes, redefine and bring back the wuxia genre, which is
now at the end of its tether, with Seven Swords of Mt Tian by putting emphasis on
story, character development, philosophies, values of life, humanity and realistic martial arts sequences
with eloquently distinctive styles.
Seven Swords of Mt Tian traces the
chivalrous tales of the two generations of Seven Swordmasters whose martial
arts skills or apprenticeships are in
one way or another connected to three retired martial arts doyens - Reverend
Ming Hui, former Wudang Sect leader Zhuo Yi Rang, and Bride with White Hair -
who now live in seclusion at the Heavenly Mountains.
Expanding on the scope of the original material, Tsui Hark provides
backgrounds for each of the swordmasters with events preceding the novel,
and based on his interpretation of wuxia, designed seven precious swords -
actually fourteen in all, including the second generation - for the
production: Gallivanting Dragon, Green Dehydration, Never Enquiring, Sun and Moon,
Star-Rivalry , Heavenly Cascade, God Relinquishing, which will be assigned to Chu Zhao
Nan, Yang Yun Cong, Fu Qing Zhu, Mu Lang, Xin Long Zi, Wu Yuan Ying and Han Zhi
Bang. The seven priceless swords
were forged by Dhyana Master Hui Ming at Mt Heaven, based upon seven different
realms. The Seven Swordmasters, each with their own personalities, roam the
pugilistic world carrying these seven swords, doing a series of earthshaking
deeds. Mao Wan Lian, Yi Lan Zhu, Gui Zhong Ming etc would appear in the second
segment of TV series while their first generation become the key characters in
the first part. "The most intriguing weapon in
Chinese wuxia culture is sword. How a sword is wielded is the union of the
cultivation of (wo)man and sword, it's a kind of discipline, and swordplay is
also a personification of a person's personality," says Tsui Hark.
May the wuxia revolution begin...
Plot Synopsis:
AD
1664, the Manchurians defeated the Ming Empire and successfully captured
Central Plains. To exert its influence and ensure trouble-free reign, the
Manchu government went all out to arrest the pugilists. To save Central Plains,
a recluse at Mt Tian, Dhyana Master Reverend Hui Ming (Master Shadow Glow), ordered Seven
Swordmasters to descend Mt Tian.
However, after leaving Mt Tian, circumstances dictated that the Seven Swordmasters
were to go their separate ways. So, they arranged to meet each other by Qiantang
River one year later.
During a battle, Yang Yun Cong was seriously wounded. He was saved by an enemy
general's daughter Nalan Ming Hui. The two fell in love and gave birth to a
daughter. However, Nalan Ming Hui was compelled by her father to marry
Prince Duo Duo. Yang Yun Cong asked Nalan Ming Hui to leave with him, but,
as the safety of her family was at stake, she declined. Yang Yun Cong
snatched away their daughter and went to Qiantang River in response to prior appointment with
six other Mt Tian disciples. However, only Mu Lang showed up.
Before his death, Yang Yun Cong entrusted Mu Lang with the care of her
daughter, and told him bring her to Mt Tian to study martial arts...
Eighteen years later, Ling Mo Feng (Mu Lang) successfully inherited all the skills of Reverend
Ming Hui. Yi Lan Zhu, the baby girl of yesteryear, had also mastered Mt Tian
Swordplay. She vowed to avenge the death of her father. The remaining
Swordmasters became the leaders of Heaven and Earth Society. On learning
that Emperor Kangxi would be going to Mt Wutai to pay his homage,
they meticulously plotted to assassinate him.
