Many years back, just as Tsui Hark was writing a script She's A Hooligan, Korean movie Kwak Jae Young's My Sassy Girlfriend was released. Owing to similarities in script, Tsui Hark aborted his project. When he decided to shoot She Ain't Mean, it naturally occurred to Tsui Hark to invite Kwak Jae Young to write the script.
She Ain't Mean, a comedy on modern metropolitan life that is being done from an unforeseeable perspective, is set against the backdrop of the rapidly developing city of Beijing. It takes a look at three women of different professions and backgrounds, and presents a contemporary comedy from the way they deal with love. "There's one male protagonist who's involved in emotional entanglements with the three women. So, the three declare war on one another. They want to prove themselves in terms of wits and capabilities, to eclipse one another, and thus commence all sorts of competitions." introduces Tsui Hark.
Tsui Hark smiles, the guy in the movie is only playing second fiddle, he's already defeated under the hands of women. This inspiration came from his daily life, "Women are sometimes very troublesome. Shi Nan Shun's meanness lies in her intelligence. She can read my mind, I can never win her in real life. In the movie, the guy also can never beat the girls."
On the set, Zhou Xun, Gui Lun Mei and Zhang Yu Qi unanimously point out that Tsui Hark is the epitome of meanness. They can never catch up with him, and have no idea what kind of image Tsui Hark would create out of them.
Zhou Xun is playing 12 roles in the movie, including a doctor, a patient, a reporter, a conceived woman, etc. She says that she's most interested in the character that invents bio-chemical weapon. Gui Lun Mei will play a spice girl. Tsui Hark picks her for the role as she imparts that cheeky, irreverent, impossible personalities. He wants her to bring out that sassy, unreasonable deportment whether she's riding, playing or cooking. Zhang Yuqi plays a wealthy lady. On the difference between Tsui Hark and Stephen Chow, Zhang Yuqi says, "Stephen Chow is my boss, sometimes, I can still figure out his thinking. However, Tsui Hark is unfathomable, he doesn't do things according to conventions. I'm not always able to comprehend what he tells me, leaving me befuddled. I have to re-calibrate my mentality to contemplate on my role." Beijing Times | Video: Sina
