Retro: Darren Shahlavi On Tai Chi 2 Transcribed by Adam Cemal
First of all Darren went to Hong Kong as a stepping stone to America, he wanted to learn from the guys in Hong Kong, hoping to bring some of their action skills to English language films. He is a very good martial artist himself and recently appeared in I Spy with Eddy Murphy and Owen Wilson.
Darren says the film Tai Chi 2 was shot under the title "Tai Chi Fist" but they released it in Asia and North America as "Tai Chi 2" (which doesn’t really make sense as it’s not the sequel to Jets Li’s Tai Chi Master.)
Taichi 2 was shot on location in Hangzhou, China and the crew and everybody flew there from HK.

-- Wilson Yip on Sha Po Lang -- In an interview, Wilson Yip, says that, Sha Po Lang (SPL), his first foray into kungfu movie, is another kind of experimentation on his part. He remarks that Donnie Yen, Sammo Hung and Wu Jing are especially accomplished martial arts stars. Initially, when the studio intended to make a martial arts movie, they did not want to make something that has fights for fights' sakes like in the 80s. So, he thought that they have to come up with a really good storyline in order to attract the audience. And to distinguish it from the rest of the pack, the movie is set in modern times. Being his first pure martial arts movie, Wilson Yip approached the script with utmost caution. Wilson Yip, who also wrote the script with scriptwriters Jack Ng and Szeto Kam-Yuen, injected many of his ideas and thoughts into movie.

-- New Police Story -- New Police Story, a crime thriller directed by Benny Chan, starring Jackie Chan, Nicholas Tse, Charlie Yeung, Andy On, Liu Kai Chi, Daniel Wu, opens on September 23/24 in Asia. The film is about a group of teens who commits crime in order to attract attention from their parents who are neglecting them. It's up to Jackie Chan, aided by Nicholas Tse, to stop them. Review: When it comes to leaping tall buildings, Superman ain't got nothing on action hero Jackie Chan. He runs up vertical walls. He jumps over fences. At one point in this thoroughly entertaining fifth instalment of the wildly successful Police Story series, he even runs down the side of a skyscraper. Yes, this is 'Vintage Jackie Chan', as the poster declares. For once, a movie lives up to the marketing hype. This is the classic Chan formula that once ruled the Chinese New Year box-office market with an iron fist. There are lots of nicely choreographed fights and eye-popping stunts that rely on the performers' athleticism instead of CGI frenzy. The result is an action-packed, snappily paced rollercoaster ride with the requisite thrills and spills. -- The Seven Swords -- Tsui Hark's TV adaptation of Seven Swords of Mt Tian has already raised doubts and furore over its fidelity to the original, but he is taking his far-fetched imagination even further with The Seven Swords movie hexalogy, though the basic principles remain. The first instalment is barely reminiscent of the original novel. What Tsui Hark sets his sights upon are how the Seven Swords are forged and the story and background behind each Sword. In the novel, Chu Zhao Nan has already turned into a baddie, but in the first movie, Chu Zhao Nan, played by Donnie Yen, is still a goodie. Tsui Hark has consulted the novel's author Liang Yusheng, who has read the script, on this, and Liang Yusheng is very accommodating to the major surgery Tsui Hark has performed, "The presentation of a film is vastly different from a novel and it's not unusual for changes to be made."

-- House of Fury -- Stephen Fung's second directorial work Jingwu Family (tentative) 《精武家庭》 has started filming recently. Some of the cast includes Gillian Chung, Josie Ho, Daniel Wu, Anthony Wong and Stephen Fung himself. Recently, Gillian Chung's throat was injured by a stunt performer during an action scene and the doctor advised her not to talk for three days and not to sing for three weeks to ensure proper recovery. Anthony Wong, having a number of intense fight scenes in the movie, suffered from numerous injuries too and once, he was once nearly fractured. He said that in a scene that took six days to complete, he has to battle over ten ninjas, and whether he is eating or driving, he has to fight them all the time. He remarked that he was very happy with that scene after viewing the playback. When asked, the movie's martial arts director Yuen Wo Ping expressed confidence in the action sequences in Jingwu Family, believing that they will be better than his previous work Kill Bill. Netease, Taizhou Daily Josie Ho is currently in production of House of Fury 《精武家庭》, directed by Stephen Fung. Apparently, she'd have a fight scene against Eighth Master (Yuen Wo Ping) in the movie. Josie Ho has been training under Eighth Master in the recent days and has to fight till her head is swimming. It has been extremely taxing, but her skills have improved considerably. She says it's worth all the hardships for she treasures the chance to spar against the first-class martial arts director of Hollywood. Gillian Chung plays Daniel Wu's 'target' in the movie. It's especially tiring for both of them, who have to juggle between two filming units. On the other hand, Michael Fitzgerald Wong is having an easier time, since he merely has to sit in the wheelchair all day long when filming. MyRice, Netease
