Daniel Lee explains his preference for Zhao Zilong aka Zhao Yun over other characters in Romance of Three Kingdoms: "Apart from being a great fighter, he's a valiant person, and apart from being a good source material based on commercial factors, Zhao Zilong's life is quite pitiful. To the people of Three Kingdoms, death was not fearful. But Zhao Zhi Long had to bear the loss of the Five Generals, all leaving him, one by one, it's even more painful than death itself."
Daniel Lee says that in the film, he is putting emphasis on Zhao Zilong's personalities, as well as the sacrifices he pays in the name of war.
While Maggie Q had done a few action movies before, it's the first time that she was fighting on horseback. She's says that it was very thrilling, shooting this film was a great demand on her physically, and she had to stay focus.
As one with great compassion, the animal lover and vegetarian actress spares no effort in animal welfare and protection. Maggie Q was very delighted to know that she'll be working with horses. Before filming, she'd communicate with the horse she'll be riding, trying to understand it, and hug it, whispering gently into its ears. It was such a tender moment.
However, despite the safety precautions she had taken, she still injured her back while filming, and needed to rest for 5 days. She was upset over it as it held up the production. She felt bad about it.
Sammo Hung, who is also the martial arts choreographer for the film, admits that it's very difficult shooting on horse riding scenes, "We have been accustomed to fighting on the ground, so while it's special, it's also difficult to implement horseback battles, often involving weapons like spears. I prefer coming to blows directly, it's less exaggerated. Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the The Dragon is quite different from what I has done before."
Sammo Hung says that Maggie Q has the making of a female action star, "Not only is Maggie Q able to move lithely, but she's also has the nimbleness." He also reveals that he doesn't have much action scenes in this film. Rather, it's mainly drama. So, a reporter makes an enquiry if it was because he couldn't fight anymore and so wished for a switch, he quips, "Don't assume that I'm not capable of fighting because of my age. Even the few of you combined effort, you wouldn't be able to defeat me.
"An actor often hopes to try out different roles. I also wish to shoot some romance, but don't have the chance. Many says that Jackie Chan is doing dramas like Shinjuku Incident as he's getting old, and is not able to fight any more. He's still deft as ever, second to none. You should show some respect for an artiste." TOM, The Beijing News | Photos: Sina
