Alright! Xing Yu will be featured in the film.
I hope i get to see him let loose with his
martial arts in this film against donnie this
time around cause he was finished off by
donnie rather quickly in flashpoint.
Hope to see Xing Yu being given full play to his skills this time, especially when he has a name that suggests someone
who's crazy about martial arts. Xing Yu was under-utilised in Dragon Tiger Gate and Flash Point and it seems to do with
Donnie Yen not being able to get the most out of him due to his lack of experience with filming, which seems to be what
Donnie Yen points out in an interview on Dragon Dynasty's Flash Point DVD.
Wasn't the head injury a slightly earlier scene, where Xing Yu was running down the road?
Here's the quote regarding the audio commentary from Kungfu Cinema: "But as soon as the action heats up Donnie
lights up and starts talking his head off about the frustrations of working with the promising, yet inexperienced Xing
Yu and shooting various action sequences."
So, perhaps, getting the Dragon Dynasty Flash Point DVD might shed some light on the difficulties Donnie Yen had
working with Xing Yu. Anyhow, with Sammo Hung choreographing this time, it might be different for Xing Yu.
Thanks for clearing that up. Makes less sense to me... Xing Yu worked with both Sammo and Woo Ping in Kung Fu Hustle as
well as Nicky Li in Fatal Contact (although it's just a cameo) and those movies weren't enough experience for him?
but on the other hand, those had the standard HK choreography which Yu had no problem getting into but only for the MMA
choreography did he had difficulties because he was never trained nor familiar with western styles. Maybe that's what
Donnie meant by that quote.
Heres a little suggestion, I think if martial arts actors want to take action films to the next level, they should cross
train in other areas of martial arts and then take what they learned from an art thats relatively new to them and show
them on screen the best way possible. I dont know if knowing kung fu/wushu is enough, nowadays if you want to gain more
and more people to the martial arts film genre, you got to show something different like say what donnie did with
flashpoint showing mma, tony jaa showed muay boran in ong bak (and yes some of his acrobatic kicks isnt something new)
and what johnny nguyen did with the rebel showing vovinam (vietnamese martial art) in the film. I personally think it
would help if an actor cross-trained.
