Non-Martial Artists to Play Title Roles in Iron Mask?

The much anticipated Yuen Wo Ping film Iron Mask/Iron Monkey sequel is slated to begin production in July. The budget is around 150m yuan and funding comes from Europe and Mainland. Yuen Woo Ping intends to create Iron Mask a Chinese version of Batman and introduce the film to Europe and US. The film will feature a fair amount of martial arts scenes and special effects.

However, what's not so promising is that Louis Koo and Shawn Yue are expected to play the lead roles. While good in their own right and thy have done some decent action scenes, neither is an actual martial artist. Even those approached prior to this were non-martial artists - Chow Yun Fat, Jay Chow, Andy Lau - though they didn't eventually take up this project.

Set in Republican period in the early 1900s, Louis Koo plays a police constable by day, but when night falls, he dons a mask (which could imply frequent doubling) and goes about relieving the rich of their coffers so as to relieve the poverty-stricken, and even teams up with his disciple Shawn Yue against a very powerful, devious merchant. Being fan of Batman, Louis Koo is very happy to accept this role. Information Times

oh darn, I was afriad it was going to star non-martial artists. as good of an actor louis koo may be, i cant really see him doing any martial arts in a movie. Plus, their will be special effects in their? how dissappointing, i wished wo ping kept the action real. I got only one question? whatever happened to just being able to spot for new talents (actual martial artists) and giving them the lead roles like what wo ping did with jackie chan, donnie and wu jing?

Shawn Yue once said that he doesn't wish to do any more action roles after Invisible Target as he's not been trained in martial arts since young. Yet, ironically, he's been getting action roles - one after another.

Perhaps, because this is quite a big production, and Yuen Wo Ping is accountable to the investors, he has to - against his own choice - cast someone with more bankability. Or perhaps, as the protoganist would be putting on a mask when he goes pillaging, it doesn't matter so much here. Anyhow, since the dust has already settled apparently, we can only wish for martial artists for the villains. Wasn't there a casting call for this, after all?

I would imagine CGIs would be employed in a more subtle fashion like digital enhancements, face replacements (for ahem doubling), maybe some bullet-time or something Yuen Wo Ping picked up from Hollywood. Even then I would prefer less special effects, for even in Fearless, the digital speed-ups and slow-mos are quite distracting.
