Beyond Our Ken: Toe to toe with Ken Lo Like most fans of martial arts action cinema, I first became aware of Ken Lo (AKA Lo Wai-kong) due to his final reel duel with Jackie Chan in Drunken Master 2. In this fight, Lo displays his legendary 180 degree kick amid a display of boot work that harks back to the glory days of Korean bad guys Wong Jang Lee and Hwang In-shik. I actually met him on the set of that film. Back in the day, you could pretty much walk onto the Golden Harvest back lot unhindered and watch them shoot, and I used to do just that. -- Fatal Move -- The gala premiere of Fatal Move on Feb 26 was attended by director Dennis Law, producer Charles Heung and his son Jacky Heung, most of the cast members including Sammo Hung, Simon Yam, Ken Lo, Wu Jing, Maggie Shiu, Tien Niu, Carisa Yan, Lau Kam Ling, etc. Simon Yam appears especially excited. He greets the audiences effusively and also provides autographs prodigiously. He says that at Berlin Film Festival, the film was sold to an India distributor and he was invited to do promotions in India in May.
Sammo Hung appears quieter and more stoic, and he doesn't forget to promote the younger generations. He says that Wu Jing is one with very bright future, but timing is not favourable due to lack of martial arts films being produced. Sammo Hung hopes that, given his skills, Wu Jing would carve out a niche for himself in the film industry. Video: Sina, Sohu | More photos: Tom, QQ, Mop

-- Fatal Move -- In a bid to bringing freshness to the audience and to re-invigorate the market, director Dennis Law makes the HK$20m Fatal Move an action-packed film that is full of extreme violence and gore, to the extent that it receives a Category 3 rating in Hong Kong. And by the same token, it won't be released in Mainland theatres as Dennis Law refuses to compromise by editing a tamer version that conforms to their strict censorship.
Dennis Law instead sets his sights on the Western market, with an assembly of cast familiar to them - Sammo Hung, Ken Lo, Simon Yam, Danny Lee, where Chinese martial arts film DVDs are selling very well. He believes that the martial arts scenes are the strongest asset of Fatal Move, in particular, the major weapon fight scene between Sammo Hung and Wu Jing.

-- Fatal Move (Duo Shuai) -- 《夺帅》Fatal Move/Duo Shuai (tentative), a movie on triad feuds produced by Charles Heung and directed by Dennis Law, held an official production inauguration on August 1. Sammo Hung and Ken Lo take on the role of triad leaders of different factions. Tien Niu and Carisa Yan play Sammo Hung's wife and mistress respectively. As a smart and authoritative "mob sister", Tien Niu often battles it out against Ken Lo's wife Pinky Cheung. Simon Yam plays Sammo Hung's younger brother, while Danny Lee a police officer, both of whom are pursuing Maggie Shiu. Simon Yam is a mean 2nd-in-command when it comes to triad matters, but is quite a kind person otherwise. Wu Jing, as a triad member under Sammo Hung, will sport dyed hair and tattoos. Charles Heung's son Jacky Heung, who'd have one or two major battle scenes, has made sufficient preparation for his role.
Sammo Hung and Wu Jing will have quite a number of action scenes and they will also get to clash against each other. Sammo Hung thinks well of Wu Jing's martial arts ability. However, he feels that Hong Kong action film industry is unable to recreate the glories of past for there aren't many young actors who are trained in martial arts and able to take hardships. He says that won't be retiring soon for he enjoys movie-making. Tien Niu and Wu Jing are happy to be working together again. The two of them have collaborated on A Chinese Ghost Story TV series previously, with Tien Niu as Wu Jing's mentor's wife. Off camera, Wu Jing regards Tien Niu as a maternal figure. Heung Joh hopes he'd be not be given special treatment on the account that he's the son of Charles Heung. He just wishes to be regarded as an ordinary actor. Wenwei Paper | Video: Megajoy

-- Underground Fist -- 《黑拳》 Black Fist/Underground Fist (tentative) has just begun production on April 11. Produced by Charles Heung and Paco Wong, and directed by Dennis Law (producer of the award winning Election), the cast includes Wu Jing, Ronald Cheng, Miki Yeung, Theresa Fu, Timmy Hung, Andy On, Nicky Li, Ken Lo and Hou Shasha. Nicky Li choreographs the action. In the movie, Ronald Cheng plays a Sanshou coah who teaches Wu Jing fighting techniques and is, in some way, like a friend to him too. Ronald Cheng, who has been doing comedies usually, says that there won't be much humour in Underground Fist which features highly realistic fights without much wirework, adding that Wu Jing was nearly knocked out a few times when training. Ronald Cheng would not have any romances either, "Usually, the really good fighters would not reveal their skills easily, and would not be involved in any relationships." -- House of Fury -- It's the opportunity of a lifetime. Fourteen-year old martial artist Jake Strickland from Columbus, Georgia USA has joined the leading cast of House of Fury, a Hong Kong martial arts movie now in production from EMG and Jackie Chan's JCE Movies, with direction by Master Yuen Wo Ping. While promoting Around the World in 80 Days on the Regis and Kelly television show here in the US, Jackie Chan was shown a clip of Jake Strickland performing on Regis and Kelly on a previous day. Genuinely impressed by the boy's skills, Chan ended up getting Strickland a prominent role in House of Fury that has been rewritten just for him.
