Have Perseverance, Will Succeed 李渊 Li Yuan was born on August 7, 1982 in Shangdong to an impecunious peasant family of over 10 members, at the time when Jet Li's Shaolin Temple took the nation by storm. Growing up being a fan of martial arts films, Li Yuan started formal training in martial arts at the age of 12. When he was in primary 4, he made a bold decision to quit school in order to learn wushu. He was subsequently punished by his parents. But on considering that he wasn't doing very well in his academic studies, Li Yuan's parents finally relented.
Li Yuan was raised mostly by his wushu champion brother 李炳雷 Li Bing Lei, who also teaches him martial arts. Li Bing Lei is 8 years his senior. Li Yuan was brought up under very strict upbringing, and he matured earlier than most people. In his youth, he got only one rest day on Lunar New Year; on other days, he would train for four to five hours daily. There were times when thoughts of skiving did occur to Li Yuan, but on thinking of how hard his parents were toiling in the fields in his hometown, even in bitter winters, Li Yuan cast aside all weariness.

-- "Chen Zhen" -- Beijing Enlight Pictures held a press conference yesterday, announcing its plan to produce/co-produce/distribute 30 films in the next three years. Gordon Chan, Kirk Wong, Joe Ma, Dante Lam, Lee Chi Ngai have all signed collaboration deals with it.
Gordon Chan's first deal with Beijing Enlight Pictures is "Chen Zhen" which is still in scripting stage. He'll be working on it in full force after completing another film in Japan. Donnie Yen has already verbally agreed to play the eponymous character. Gordon Chan says that this is a very difficult subject since stories concerning Chen Zhen have been adapted countless times, including Fist of Legend that Gordon Chan directed in 1995. However, as one with keen interests on Chen Zhen, he has confidence of creating something different. He says that "Chen Zhen" is tailor made for Donnie Yen and hopes to begin production at the end of this year.
Kirk Wong would be working with Beijing Enlight Pictures on Five Venoms remake, possibly with Jay Chou and Wong Lee Hom in the leads. Other films in the works include Flowers of Apocynum, Codex of Weapons, Chinese Warriors, Special Task Force, etc (all tentative titles).
Since Confession of Pain, Beijing Enlight has been involved in producing/distributing Wonder Woman, Flash Point and Triangle. The movies they are distributing this year include Tsui Hark's Missing aka The Eye 3 (May), Jeffrey Lau's Fantastic Water Babes with Gillian Chung, Eva Huang Shengyi, Charlene Choi, Alex Fong, Stephen Fung, Tian Liang (July). Zhang Yuqi is unsure of the sudden turn of event, "This is the last scene, I'd only know the prior events after they were filmed." She says that the scene was an amendment made on that day, this is Tsui Hark's customary ways of filming, "Often, when I arrive on the set in the morning, he'd hand me three pages of script, saying that it's what we'd be filming today. I'm taken aback, what he gave me earlier only had two paragraphs, why such a big change?"
Zhou Xun, who would be doing some environment awareness programmes after She Ain't Mean wraps up in April, adds that, apart from an earlier script, Tsui Hark'd add a mini-script, and each day, before filming begins, there'd be amendments, "Because of this, I don't have to memorise the older script, for we have a new script now."
Upon being queried, Tsui Hark says, there're bound to be changes, but I don't add additional scenes at last minute, "Those have long been in my mind, but I did not have everything on the script and shown to them." Sina As a side note, Sanda athlete-turned-actor Sang Wei Lin mentioned recently that he's currently training himself intensively to prepare for an upcoming film with Tsui Hark.

-- She Ain't Mean --Tsui Hark's modern day comedy 《女人不坏》 She Ain't Mean (tentative) has begun production in Beijing on January 8. It's described as a modern version of Peking Opera Blues with Zhou Xun, Gui Lun Mei and Kitty Zhang Yu Qi taking on the leading roles. The three respectively underwent training in Chi Kung, in boxing, and in etiquette and ballet in preparation for the role. And Tsui Hark will amend the script according to their performances. Tsui Hark says that the most important element in this film is beauty, "Everyone you see in this movie, the dresses, the objects are all the most beautiful and avant-garde." Tsui Hark was inspired by a calligraphy with the words She Ain't Mean that he saw when he awoke one day, and images of countless women flashed across his mind. While he didn't gave it a careful thought, the various characters began to gradually form into something more concrete after several days.
